Facts on Energy-Saving Myths

There are some myths running around out there that need to be clarified
with some reasons why they are just that ….  Myths!

Myth 1 – Replacing windows is a good investment.

New windows will take 20 to 30 years to pay for themselves. Replacing
single-pane windows with double-pane low-e windows will save energy and money.
In a house with 20 windows, you will save $17 per window in energy cost each
year. It will take you almost 24 years to recoup the cost of windows that cost
$400.00 each. A more economical option: storm windows, starting at around $30,
you can install them over your existing single pane windows in about 30 minutes
per window.

Myth 2 – Exterior caulking is the best way to seal leaks

Done correctly, exterior caulking keeps out water. But if you want to make
you house more energy efficient, work inside, not outside. Adding more insulation
should seal most attic air leaks. On inside exterior walls remove the covers of
outlets and switches and caulk or spray expanding foam in the gaps around the
electrical boxes. Add a foam gasket before replacing the cover plate to reduce
drafts through the box.

Myth 3 – Closing registers saves energy

Most heating duct systems have so many leaks that closing a register won’t force
more warm air into other rooms…. it will force more air out of the leaks.

In addition, forced air heating systems are designed to operate with all of the
registers open. The fixed speed blower won’t perform as well with registers
closed and can create a whistling in the ducts.

If in the winter you want to close off a portion of your house, like the upstairs,
talk to a rep from your furnace/heating company to rebalance your registers. Of
course you will have to call them back out in the spring to re-balance them to
include the upstairs.
